Graduated Drivers Licensing is a system that allows teens to gradually ease into driving, by slowly increasing their driving privileges as they advance through the stages. Michigans's GDL consists of two segments of training and instruction and three levels of licensing.

Segment 1 consists of at least 24 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 6 hours of live behind the wheel training.
Segment 2 includes a minimum of 6 hours classroom instruction designed to provide teens with defensive driving skills.

License Level 1: A supervised learners permit.
License Level 2: An intermediate license that limits night time driving.
License Level 3: A full privilege drivers license issued after all requirements are filled
